Recovering together

Couples rehab

When both partners are struggling with substance use, recovering separately can be harder than it needs to be. Our couples program lets you go through treatment at the same time, each with your own therapist, and work on the relationship together.

Inside couples rehab

Each partner has their own treatment plan, therapist, and groups. Your recovery belongs to you. Alongside that, you meet weekly with a couples therapist to work on communication, trust, and the patterns that kept substance use going.

Couples typically stay in separate gender-specific rooms during residential care and spend structured time together during joint sessions, meals, and approved activities.

What’s included

  • Separate individual therapy for each partner
  • Weekly couples therapy sessions
  • Behavioral couples therapy techniques
  • Communication and conflict skills
  • A shared relapse prevention plan
  • Parenting support when you have children

Is this right for you?

  • Both partners use alcohol or drugs
  • You’re committed to staying together
  • Neither partner feels unsafe in the relationship
  • You want to return to the same home sober
  • You both are willing to do individual work
  • You’re ready to change patterns, not just habits

Typical length

30 to 90 days

Each partner’s length of stay is based on their own clinical needs. Partners may step down to outpatient care at different times.

Recovery story

Two people, one fresh start

Sam and Taylor had been together nine years and had started using together during a hard stretch after losing a pregnancy. Each tried to quit alone, and each time the other’s use pulled them back.

In our program they each worked through grief with their own therapist and met together on Wednesdays. They left with a plan neither of them could have built alone.

We had to learn to be sober people before we could be a sober couple. They gave us room to do both.

How couples treatment works

  1. A joint consultation

Admissions speaks with each partner, separately and together, to make sure the program is a safe and good fit.

  2. Individual treatment

Each partner completes detox if needed and begins their own plan with their own therapist.

  3. Couples sessions

Weekly sessions with a couples therapist focus on communication, trust, and recovery as a team.

  4. Going home together

You leave with a shared plan for home, outpatient care, and support from our alumni community.

Safety and individual recovery come first

Couples treatment only helps when both people feel safe. Our admissions team screens for relationship violence and coercion, and if couples treatment isn’t appropriate, we’ll help each partner find the right individual care.

Research shows that behavioral couples therapy can improve both relationship satisfaction and sobriety. Our therapists use these methods alongside each partner’s own treatment.

Questions about couples rehab

Don’t see your question? Admissions can answer it in a quick, confidential call.

Can couples share a room?

During residential treatment, partners stay in separate rooms. You will spend structured time together in sessions, at meals, and during approved activities.

What if only one of us is ready?

That’s common. The partner who is ready can begin treatment, and the other can join our family program or start later. We can talk through options on the phone.

Do we need the same insurance?

No. Each partner’s benefits are verified separately. Our admissions team will explain what each plan covers.

Do you accept same-sex couples?

Yes. Our couples program is open to all committed couples, married or not.
